Qld Symphony Orchestra heading west to work with kids

THE Queensland Symphony Orchestra will be heading out to south-west Queensland for the first time this week to perform with local musicians and work with music teachers.

The tour, known as the Chinchilla Miles Roma (CMR) Initiative, will give residents and local students a once-in-a-lifetime look at the state's premier classical music ensemble.

Musicians from QSO will run workshops and instrument demonstrations with primary and secondary students in Chinchilla, Roma and surrounding areas, as well as community musicians from Chinchilla Town Band and Chinchilla Adult String Ensemble over Tuesday and Wednesday.

The visit will culminate in a free concert at Chinchilla Cultural Centre on Wednesday at 6pm and will bring the town's musical community together to perform with QSO musicians in an evening of much-loved orchestral classics.

QSO Chief Executive David Pratt said the orchestra looked forward to forging a bond with the people of Chinchilla, Miles and Roma.

"QSO is an orchestra for all Queenslanders,” Mr Pratt said.

"While our base is in Brisbane, it is important for us as the state's only professional symphony orchestra to ensure everyone has access to world-class musical experiences, as well as opportunities to engage with and learn from our musicians.”

Participating schools include Roma State College, St John's Catholic School, Chinchilla Christian College, St Joseph's Primary School, Chinchilla State School and Chinchilla State High School.
