Qld to consider changing 'racist' street names

The state government could consider supporting a move to change the name of the state's Boundary Streets, but only after extensive consultation with indigenous groups, councils and local communities.

The issue has flared up in Brisbane at various times, with the latest push coming after advocates for the change altered West End's Boundary Street sign to read 'Boundless' Street, with an online petition following on its heels.

Curfews were enacted as part of the racist policy, which saw indigenous people's forced back behind the boundaries at certain times under the threat of incarceration and violence.

Aboriginal activist Sam Watson told Fairfax Media he wanted the street names to remain, as a reminder of the "very bloody and very ugly segments of our joint history together that should not be ignored".

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said he would speak with indigenous elders to learn their views on the matter.
