IF an Atherton Tablelands pound hadn't contacted the Rockhampton Zoo with news of their find, Meeka would have been euthanized.
The wild dingo puppy is now the newest addition to the zoo, and Yvette Fanning could not be more thrilled.
"Her mum had been hit by a car and some drivers passing by saw the pup lying next to her mum... they took her to a local dog shelter," the team leader said.
"We were on the lookout for a mate for our single male dingo Ernie for a while now and we wanted a female.
"Fortunately for Meeka the shelter cared enough about her to find her a home at a zoo."
Meeka, whose DNA testing will soon determine how "pure dingo" she is, will join Ernie in their new enclosure once construction is complete.
Yvette said even if the pup wasn't 100% dingo; it wouldn't make her any less deserving of her rescue.
As for now, Meeka and Ernie have enjoyed their daily walks together since her arrival in December.
"We can't leave her permanently in with Ernie at the moment because she is still too little," Yvette said.
"So she goes home with one of our keepers at night and lives with his family, she was actually named by his four-year-old daughter."
Yvette said she hoped the rescued dingos would raise the animal's profile in Queensland.
"They are a valuable ecological asset. Where dingos are there are less foxes and cats," she said.
"I do believe they have a place."
