Promising season lies ahead for Echidnas
RUGBY UNION: Roma Echidnas are looking forward to a promising season after their recent annual general meeting, with a new committee elected and a focus on bringing more players to the club.
The 2018 president of the local rugby union club, Nick Cook, stepped down due to family commitments and nominated Richard Bright to take on the role.
Following Bright, AJ Riley was elected as vice-president, Geoff Kelk took on the role of secretary, Matt Noller as treasurer and Rob Loughnan, Nathan Garvie and David Hickey took on the roles of the committee.
The club sent heartfelt thanks to the outgoing committee, many of whom stood aside due to other commitments, but intend on fully supporting the club in the near future.
Bright commended the outgoing committee on the time and effort they put into the club after a rocky beginning to the start of the 2018 season to ensure it stayed in the competition.
"I really appreciate what you guys have done for the club. The club is ours and it is only as good as we make it,” he said.
"At the end of the day it is a club to have some fun with, have a drink, host some great events, we just have to crank it up and that is my overall goal.
"We need to start sourcing players now because there is no point getting to February with only five players because we will be back to where we started.”
In the president's report, Cook touched on the successful moments throughout the 2018 season, including the rugby sevens competition and the C-grade side making finals for the first time since 2014.
"The rugby sevens women's team was fielded for the first time this year. I would like to express my thanks to the sevens committee, coaches and everyone else who contributed to make the tournament successful,” he said. "The 15 man team had a rough start to the season, unfortunately the first match against Condamine Cods was forfeited. I was also in a position where I had to defend the Roma club's right to remain in the competition.
”Fortunately we were able to convince the governing body.”
