Price war: Aldi takes fight to supermarket giants
GROCERY prices are on the way down as the supermarket giants launch a price-cutting war to fend off challenges from discount outlets like Aldi.
Australian Competition and Consumer Commission member Professor Stephen King told 4BC Mornings that Woolworths and Coles were facing stiff competition from German discounter Aldi, which was continuing to cut prices.
"They've (Aldi) come in and just ripped the guts out of the staples for the supermarkets," Mr King said on radio this morning.

"Sure Coles and Woolworths can try further deep discounting on the essentials, on the milk, the flour, the margarine, the sort of things that every family needs pretty much every week, but they're facing these very, very slick operations such as Aldi who are always going to be able to meet and undercut them."
