Policeman punched at crash scene on Toowoomba street

A 24-YEAR-OLD man police claim punched a policeman and assaulted a tow-truck driver at the scene of a crash in Toowoomba on Friday night had only been released from prison four days ago.

Trevor William Cordwell remains in the watch house this weekend after his solicitor Brad Skuse told a special Saturday morning sittings of the Toowoomba Magistrates Court that his client would not be applying for bail at this stage.

The police officer, tow-truck driver and a Queensland Ambulance Service team had attended a two vehicle crash at the corner of Greenwattle and South Streets in Harristown about 10.16 Friday night.

A QAS spokesman told The Chronicle that the ambulance crew were returning to base from the crash when they received a call from police requesting they return to the scene of the crash on the report of the policeman and tow-truck driver being assaulted.

Police claim Cordwell, who was not involved in the car crash, had approached the uniform policeman as he was putting details of the crash into his iPad while standing next to the police car.

Police claim Cordwell then punched the officer to the side of the head and assaulted the tow-truck driver.

The officer was taken to St Vincent's Hospital and treated for relatively minor injuries.

Cordwell was charged with serious assault of a police officer and common assault and held in the watch house overnight.

Mr Skuse told the court his client was on parole and asked that the matter be adjourned to Monday so the parole board would have time to ascertain his client's parole status.

There being no application for bail, Magistrate Graham Lee remanded Cordwell in custody and adjourned the matter for mention back in the same court on Monday.
