Police on alert at the Roma Cup this weekend
IF YOU plan on drinking or taking drugs before driving at the Roma Cup this weekend, you will be caught.
That's the message coming from Roma police, who said they will be out in force in lead up the Roma Cup this weekend, with high visibility policing, in an effort to ensure patrons have a safe environment for the event.
Senior Sergeant Scott Jackson said the focus is providing patrons a safe environment to attend.
"There will be high visibility policing on the main roads and high visibility foot patrols through the day," Snr Sgt Jackson said.
"The focus will be on helping patrons arrive safely to and from the event.
"Police will be out in force for the night time event to curb alcohol fuelled violence."
Additional RBTs, along with higher foot patrols and an increased presence of police officers, will be part of the police operation for Roma Cup day.
While he said police weren't there to ruin everyone's fun, Snr Sgt Jackson said patrons need to have a plan to get home if they drink.
"I want people to have a good time, but consume alcohol responsibly," he said.
"Police are preparing to deal with roughly 5000 people between Thursday and Saturday."
Similar warnings were made over 2014, with Senior Sergeant Barry Winters ushering in the same warning this year.
"We want everyone to enjoy themselves responsibly," Snr Sgt Winters said.
"There is no excuse to get behind the wheel after drinking when there is camping grounds, taxi services and breath testers on site."
With the population of the town set to double over the weekend, more officers may be called in to assist the police force with their operations.
