BYRNE: Smear campaign link to ancient shooting allegations

ROCKHAMPTON MP Bill Byrne has fired back at 'ancient rumours' involving the discharge of a firearm in his home in the presence of his wife.

The Queensland Police Minister says the event took place before Port Arthur, which was a turning point for him in relation to having firearms in his private home and he disposed of his weapons immediately.

He says the 'ancient rumours' have been dragged up as part of a deeply personal smear campaign. Read his full response here: Bill Byrne says shooting allegations are 'smear campaign'

8.15am: ROCKHAMPTON MP Bill Byrne has come under fire after reports he used a rifle at his home to shoot a rat.

The Courier-Mail report says Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has been called on to stand down Mr Byrne, who is the Police Minister, for using a rifle to shoot rats in the roof of his suburban home.

The Opposition will today write to Police Commissioner Ian Stewart calling for an investigation into whether Mr Byrne has complied with Queensland 's Weapons Act, which he administers.

The Premier is standing by Mr Byrne, with her office insisting firing a weapon at home was legal and any offence would be outdated anyway.

The Courier-Mail reports Mr Byrne told them on the weekend that on a number of occasions he'd taken aim at rats with his .22 calibre rifle inside the roof of his Rockhampton home. Read The Courier-Mail story here: Inquiry call into Wild Bill's rat shots
