Police name 44-year-old man who died in crash

UPDATE: Police have confirmed the man who died in a fatal traffic crash at Nebo was Paul Robert Stephens.

Mackay police district duty officer Senior Sergeant Tony McDowall said the 44-year-old had lived in the Mackay region for a number of years.

Police were still trying to establish the cause of the crash, which occurred about 5.25pm yesterday on the Peak Downs Hwy.

The sedan Mr Stephens had been driving was extensively damaged as a result of the collision with a truck, Snr Sgt McDowall said.

Mr Stephens had family residing in regional New South Wales, who had been informed, Snr Sgt McDowall said.

EARLIER: A New South Wales man has died after the vehicle he was driving and a truck collided head on at Nebo.

The crash occurred about 5.25pm yesterday on the Peak Downs Hwy.

Mackay police district duty officer Senior Sergeant Tony McDowall said the driver of the truck, a man, was taken to Mackay Base Hospital suffering shock.

The 44-year-old driver of a sedan died at the scene.

While the cause of the crash was still being investigated by the Mackay Forensic Crash Unit, Snr Sgt McDowall said it appeared the sedan, which had been heading into Mackay, veered "onto the wrong side of the road and crashed into the truck".

The deceased man's family has been notified. Snr Sgt McDowall said police still had to make enquiries about whether the 44-year-old had been holidaying or working in the region.

Both lanes of the highway were closed for several hours and diversions were in place.
