Police dog dies in the line of duty

QUEENSLAND police dog Waco has died after suffering heat stress while tracking a person who fled from a stolen car.

Waco and his handler were tracking a person in the Deception Bay area, north of Brisbane, about 1.30pm yesterday.

Police allege the person had fled on foot from a stolen car.

About 2pm, PD Waco's handler observed him becoming unsteady on his feet and recognised signs of heat stress.

PD Waco was provided with water and transported to a nearby veterinary surgery, but died about 5am today after attempts to lower his body temperature and replace fluids were unsuccessful.

The police statement said Waco's handler, an experienced senior constable, was devastated by the loss of his dog.

"The QPS takes the health and wellbeing of all police dogs very seriously and see them as valued members of the police family," the statement said.
