Pokie operators are targeting poorer suburbs

PEOPLE living in poor suburbs spend about three times as much on poker machines as those living in well-off neighbourhoods.

This is the finding of a 12-month Australian Centre for Gambling Research study that compared the gambling habits of residents living in rich and poor suburbs of Melbourne.

The Gambling in Suburban Australia report shows residents in struggling western suburbs around the Sunshine area lost about $1358 a year and those living in well-heeled eastern suburbs around Box Hill spent about $400 on the pokies annually.

The poorer regions had more poker machines than the richer areas and the venues in the struggling suburbs had child activity areas but the venues in the rich suburbs did not.

The study regions have almost the same number of households and are roughly the same distance from the Melbourne CBD.
