IT's only early days but there are plans afoot to build a new resort at Burua which would take on the characteristics of a mini town.

The proposal was before the council's Planning and Development Committee Tuesday which revealed plans for shops, cabins, a health and wellness centre, mini golf and a golf driving range, an open air cinema and a restaurant.

The development would take place over a number of stages, with stage one including 109 powered sites for grey nomads, 18 villas and cabins and areas for recreational use.

Unfortunately for the golf nuts, the driving range is planned for stage three but Gracemere Surveying and Planning Consultants' Sunil Govind said the Western Australian owners, who are backing the project, are keen to get stage one underway as soon as possible.

He said the site had originally been proposed for a workers camp but with the decline in the resources sector, the owners were now looking to transform the site into a tourist park.

"It will be a mixture of tourist recreational and a retail precinct," Mr Govind said.

"With the number of tourists driving through this will allow for more of them to stay in Central Queensland."

The resort could include a tourist information centre which would promote tourism in the Gladstone region.

Mr Govind said he would now look to apply for the relevant state development approvals.

The council said it would allow the present development application to "continue to progress" with a recommendation to be handed down at a future Planning and Development Committee meeting.

The proposed site of the development is at 72 Old Bruce Hwy.
