Music legend Paul Simon announces retirement

PAUL Simon may no longer be going to Graceland.

The legendary singer has become the latest from a generation of musicians to announce his retirement from touring.

Simon who, alongside Art Garfunkel, made up one half of the widely successful Simon & Garfunkel in the 1960s before enjoying a stellar solo career, said the rigours of life on the road had finally caught up to the 76-year-old.

He also cited the death of his band's lead guitarist and long-time friend Vincent N'guini as a contributing factor in his decision

"I love making music, my voice is still strong, and my band is a tight, extraordinary group of gifted musicians," Simon said in a statement.

"(But) I feel the travel and time away from my wife and family takes a toll that detracts from the joy of playing.

"After this coming tour, I anticipate doing the occasional performance in a (hopefully) acoustically pristine hall.

"I'd like to leave with a big Thank You to the many folks around the world who've come out to watch me play over the last 50 years."

The announcement follows the retirement of Elton John and Neil Diamond from touring.

John said his "priorities now are my children and my husband and my family" while Diamond revealed he had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.

Tickets for his Homeward Bound - The Farewell Tour will go on sale February 8.
