South-West Forum partnering to protect our kids

BIG issues for south-west Queensland are in the sights of a new alliance between the State Government and the South-West Partnership Forum.

The alliance aims to make a positive difference for those doing it tough in regional towns.

The Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services held their conference on October 14 and 15, allowing residents to discuss their experiences with drought management, domestic violence and child protection.

Lisa Lanfranchi from the DCCSDS said the event was designed to provide people with the opportunity to come together and tackle all the big issues in the South-West.

"We need to plan ahead for issues like domestic violence, just because regional communities aren't getting the input they need," Ms Lanfranchi said.

Child protection was a priority during the workshop, with director Sonya Reesby from the department providing a review of the new legislation.

"We need to look at how regional communities respond to issues like this, because they're different to urban areas like Brisbane," Ms Lanfranchi said.

"To that end, we're committed to recognising local heroes in these communities."

Formed by representatives from the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services, the South-West Partnership Forum aims to assist regional communities with social issues and build working relationships between communities for reform.
