Parkrun participants take on challenges

PARKRUN: For these three participants, Roma’s weekly Parkrun is not just a great place to make friends – it provides the chance to train for major challenges.

Toni Boon, Roxy Wichlacz and Mick Grey are three of more than 50 Parkrun regulars who will put their fitness to the test in two different events this weekend.

Boon and Wichlacz, who became friends because of Parkrun, will be part of a team to take on the Kokoda Challenge in Toowoomba, while Mick and several other Roma athletes will compete in the Kingscliff Triathlon.

“We met through Parkrun – our paths might not have crossed without it,” Boon said.

“Last year I went up and saw all the signage advertising the event and I was determined to get a team together.”

The pair, whose team, Bottletree Babes, also includes Gabby Barron and Sue Holmes, will not be alone for the challenge, since at least seven other teams will be taking part in it for 2016.

Grey, who is a regular triathlete, said he used the 5km Parkrun to test his speed.
