A SUNSHINE Coast couple have captured up-close footage of a hammerhead shark off a Sunshine Coast beach.

Tara Culverhouse was jet-skiing with her partner Keegan Knepscheld when they captured the shark on video on Sunday about midday off Mooloolaba Beach, near the groynes.

"At first I saw a big shadow in the water and slowly drove over to it to see what it was," she said.

Miss Culverhouse, a veterinary nurse, estimated the shark was almost 2m from nose to tail.

"It wasn't at all bothered by us and we weren't bothered by it either, we both thought it was a really cool experience," she said.

The Maroochydore pair are accustomed to seeing sharks, even from their own home.

"We live right opposite Maroochy River and have occasionally seen sharks swim by from our balcony," Miss Culverhouse said.

"It swam around us for a while before it went deeper."
