'Our water infrastructure is at the end of its life'

A MARANOA councillor has pleaded for the Federal Government to chip in to upgrade vital water infrastructure as the region faces water shortages.

Utilities Cr David Schefe told the Western Star the council can't rebuild water infrastructure on their budget alone.

"We need more investment, when you've got infrastructure that has been put in over 50 years ago; a lot of it eventually reaches the end of its life and it needs to be upgraded,” Cr Schefe said.

"On top of that we have experienced growth in our community, an extra 250 homes have been built with the boom and the industrial sector of the Roma community has grown quite extensively to help service the CSG industry and that puts more demand on our water resources as well.”

Earlier this week council asked residents and sporting organisations to stop watering gardens and grounds until the supply is secured.

The town's water reserves are being diminished due to high, heat-related consumption and multiple equipment breakdowns.

Cr Schefe said it would ease the burden if the federal government would chip in for infrastructure.

"For a number of years the State Government pulled funding for infrastructure, which meant the burden fell back upon councils to try and carry that and subsequently I think a lot of councils in Queensland fell behind particularly the smaller regional councils,” he said.

"In Roma, it's technically not a water shortage. The water's there, it's more that we've had a few equipment failures, which is due to the age of the network and the extremely long and hot dry summer, which has pushed the water usage up causing issues with our key bores.

"It's the amount of funding that limits what work we can do.”

When asked whether he would consider fighting for funding to upgrade the region's infrastructure, Maranoa MP David Littleproud said town water supplies was a state government responsibility.

"Labor needs to realise country people matter too,” he said.
