Roma orchard comes back to life again
THOSE who have lived in the area for a long while will remember the beautiful orchards around the area.
Properties at Red Hill, Orange Hill, Tiger Scrub and Waldron's all grew delicious citrus which you could buy locally from the green grocers.
One of the iconic orchards of the time was Rosedale, which grew delicious and juicy washington navel and valencia oranges.
Fruit trees were first planted on this property in 1920s by Clem Edwards and in 1958 the orchard was taken to new heights with aound 1200 trees grown by his son Gordon Edwards.
Later Gordon would work together on the orchard with his son Kim.
Until the 1950s and 60s the Roma area was a huge producer of oranges and madarins, one grower even pioneered a new variety of mandarin called the hickson mandarin.
But then, one-by-one the orchards started to shut their doors. Rosedale was the last producing orchard of the district. But in 1980, after aged trees and a bad case of root rot and drought, they too closed their doors.
But now year's later, orange trees are blooming again at Rosedale. Gordon and Margaret's son Mark has taken over the property with currently 120 orange trees- making Rosedale the last orchard of Roma.
You can buy these delicious oranges from Golders, Roma.
