Two Australians among wounded in London stabbing attack
AN AUSTRALIAN man and woman were among the five wounded in a stabbing attack in London on Wednesday night, which also left a 64-year-old US woman dead.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed that of the two women and three men injured, two were from Australia.
The Australian mas was stabbed in the chest and the woman in her back.
Those wounded also included people from Britain, US and Israel.
Another Australian woman was at the scene, but was not injured, according to ABC News.
British authorities are now questioning a 19-year-old Norwegian of Somali origin in relation to the knife attack.
Scotland Yard Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley -- the country's most senior anti-terrorism officer -- said there was no evidence the man was motivated by terrorism.
Instead, he said the investigation so far "increasingly points to this tragic incident as having been triggered by mental health issues".
"So far we have found no evidence of radicalisation that would suggest that the man in our custody is in any way motivated by terrorism."
When the attack occurred, there were suggestions it was likely a terror incident.
From the scene, others suggested it was related to "gang violence".
London Mayor Sadiq Khan encouraged Londoners to be "calm and vigilant" in the face of the tragedy.
"The safety of all Londoners is my number one priority and my heart goes out to the victims of the incident in Russell Square and their loved ones," Mr Khan said.
"A man was arrested at the scene. Police have spoken to him and are seeking to establish the full facts including motives for this attack.
"We all have a vital role to play as eyes and ears for our police and security services and in helping to ensure London is protected."
One woman dead, up to six hurt in suspected terror attack
ONE woman is dead and up to six people have been injured after a shocking knife attack in London.
Police are exploring whether this was an act of terrorism.
A social media user near the scene at Russell Square attributed the attack to "gang violence".
The British Metropolitan Police confirmed a man was arrested just before 11pm local time, after officers used a Taser on him.
His name was not released.
Police and ambulance crews each rushed to the scene to "provide reassurance", according to authorities.
The female victim was treated at the scene but was pronounced dead soon after.
The health of the others injured remains unclear.
Police said they were waiting for "an update on the condition of the other persons injured and details of any other injuries".
According to the Guardian a caller to BBC Radio London witnessed the scene.
"We came around the corner and there were armed police everywhere - a massive police presence - and a corpse lying in the street covered in a blanket.
"Apparently a gang stabbed a woman and she's dead.
"We went into the bar across the street and the officers came to interview us. We didn't actually see anything but some people in the bar saw something."
Paul Hutchinson, a taxi driver, said he passed the incident shortly after it occurred, Daily Mail reports.
He said: "I drove past Russell Square and the road wasn't shut but the pavement was all taped off by police, lots of armed police, lots of cars and the body was just lying on the floor. You could see the boots sticking out from under the cloth.
"Loads of armed police, cars with lights on and the body on the floor," Hutchinson added.
The attack comes only hours after Scotland Yard announced it would deploy an extra 600 officers to patrol London streets in response to the most recent terrorism attacks in France and Germany.
