Oldboy's Day : Echidnas vs The Bears
The Roma Echidnas have returned with full numbers for a home-side game, weeks after the team's lack of players put it in jeopardy.
The burgeoning team put on an impressive display against the ever-strong Toowoomba Bears' side at the Roma Oldboy's Day on Saturday.
The teams took to the Gallas Fox Park pitch shortly after 3pm, with both sides scoring within minutes of the starting whistle.
The Bears followed this with two tries off interceptions, sprinting through the Echidna defence.
The Echidnas rallied, sitting on the Bears' try-line for minutes as a series of plays pushed them closer to the line.
Finally, Echidna Adam Shorten broke through the back-line to score the team's second try at the 30 minute mark.
A successful penalty kick to the Bears brought the half time score to 22-10 to Toowoomba.
The Bears maintained the pressure in the second half, scoring two more tries in succession, five minutes after the teams took to the field.
The Echidnas were not disheartened - the Oldboy crowd cheering on two home side scores from Damien Barsby and Regan Tucker, to bring the score to 20-36.
Unfortunately the Bears hammered home, with two tries to the team ending the game 20-46 to the Bears.
Echidnas' coach Justin Garvie said the team showed promise in their game.
"We played well in patches, but we are still rebuilding the team,” Garvie said.
"We just have to get back to training - but it's good to see we have the numbers.”
