NRL makes $1 million fine official for Parramatta Eels

THE PARRAMATTA Eels have had their chance of an NRL Premiership win stripped after the team were officially docked 12 points and fined $1 million for breaching salary cap rules in 2013.

In a statement the NRL confirmed it would impose the fine and said it had also cancelled the registration of five officials at the Eels - senior executives dubbed the 'Gang of Five' by the media who first uncovered the allegations of salary cap breaches.

The punishment has hung over the heads of the club since May but was made official by the NRL today.

The team had been number 5 on the ladder and have now dropped to number 12.

NSW Liquor and Gaming is also scrutinising corporate governance at the Eels home club, the Parramatta Leagues Club, the Herald Sun reported.

The Eels have also been stripped of their win in the Auckland Nines title and its $370,000 prize money.

NRL chief executive officer Todd Greenberg said the overall impression he had from the club's responses to breach notices issued in May was that nobody was taking responsibility.

He described the salary cap breaches as deliberate, systemic and blatant.

"We have to take a stand to demonstrate that the NRL will not tolerate contraventions of the salary cap which plays such a crucial role in giving us one of the closest competitions in Australian sport," Mr Greenberg said.

"It can appeal the decision, which is its right, or it can accept this decision and turn Parramatta into the powerhouse club it should be.

"We note that there are currently several proposals for extraordinary general meetings at the club and we would urge members to support a Board and management group which is focussed on making the Eels a strong, successful team."
