Next gen of ag get a helping hand

FIRST-year university students committed to making their mark in Australia's agricultural industry are getting a helping hand from Bendigo Bank.

The Rural Bank has 25 scholarships up for grabs for first-time undergraduate students enrolled in bachelor degrees which will ultimately benefit agriculture and/or rural and regional communities.

Successful applicants will receive $5000 per year for two years, dependent on academic progress, to help with their studies, which would help cover expenses such as accommodation, course costs, study materials and equipment, and textbooks.

Expanded this year, 10 additional scholarships will be awarded to students from drought-affected communities, and up to 15 scholarships for regional and rural students across Australia.

Applications for the scholarship program will close on January 29, and successful students will be notified by April this year.

Applicants must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, a first-time student in 2019, offered a full-time place at an Australian university, and enrolled in a bachelor's degree that will enable them to contribute to the future of Australian agriculture, a spokesperson said.

"They must be a school leaver, or have taken a gap year.

"They must be able to demonstrate a career that will ultimately benefit agriculture and/or regional and rural communities.

"They should show outstanding academic achievement and community involvement as well as demonstrate excellence in and passion for agriculture.”
