Civil duties elsewhere as Weir aims at NZ

DARREN Weir's promising colt Civil Disobedience will head to New Zealand to try to make it successive Derby wins.

On Friday, Civil Disobedience had little trouble winning the 2200m Tasmanian Derby in Hobart and Weir's stable foreman Jarrod McLean said it was "full steam ahead for New Zealand".

"That was always the plan and he did nothing to persuade us otherwise," McLean said.

The 2400m New Zealand Derby is run at Ellerslie in Auckland on March 3.

McLean said Weir's runners at Caulfield on Saturday had pulled up well.

Stewards reported Tosen Stardom had the thumps, heat stress and poor recovery after his tough Orr Stakes run.

"After the race it knocked him around a bit, but he's fine," McLean said.

He said Tosen Stardom and Carlyon Cup winner Gailo Chop would run in the 1800m Peter Young Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday week.

The stable will run Brave Smash, Black Heart Bart and Humidor in the 1400m Futurity Stakes that day.

McLean said although Black Heart Bart had to be scratched from the Orr Stakes on Saturday he should be fine for the Futurity Stakes.

"He was close to right but we put bonded plates on his feet and he just wasn't quite right. He is giving us trouble in that area still but he should be right to gallop at Camperdown on Thursday," he said.

The stable's two Australian Guineas aspirants, last start winner's Cliff's Edge and Peaceful State will both run in the C.S. Hayes Stakes at Flemington on Saturday.
