New prep teacher and students for Mitchell St Patrick’s
THERE’S plenty for the kids at Mitchell St Patrick’s to be excited about in Term 1, with new P-3 teacher Jess Woods and two new prep kids making 2016 an exciting year already.
Having transferred from Ipswich, Ms Woods is excited to start the new year at St Pats with the rest of her schoolchildren.
“I’ve worked in kindergarten with years 0-5 for several years, so it was a great offer to move out to Mitchell and accept the position,” she said.
“I’m very excited to see the kids continue their schoolwork.”
Ms Woods credits the school with helping her move in, with the new teacher slowly finding her feet since moving into town.
“All the staff have been extremely helpful with the move, and the school has excellent resources for the class,” she said.
With a a class of up to 11 students, Ms Woods wants to bring play-based learning into her classroom.
“I want to make sure there’s extra exposure to new things, with a focus on reading, writing and even art,” she said.
As a P-3 class, older students can mentor younger students, which helps the students with leadership at the school.
“Having all these age groups reinforces the idea of learning with each other; the younger students look up to their older peers, and then the older students can learn about what it means to mentor and lead,” she said.
“The resources at the school are great for learning this way.
“I’m just looking forward to teaching my class through the year; it will be a wonderful opportunity.”
Acting Principal Bernadette Gobbert said the new kids were extremely excited for the new year, and were eager to read and write and had already made their first book in class.
“They’re definitely excited to be here at St Pats, and their book about the letter ‘A’ is very informative,” Ms Gobbert said.
