Young dad cries as he's sentenced to a year in prison

AS HE was sentenced to a year in jail for fraud and drug-related offences, Corey Allan Bingham had his head in his hands, unable to stop shaking or crying.

Travis George, defence lawyer for the defendant, had just explained that the 24-year-old's partner, who was six months pregnant with their third child, had recently been admitted to hospital with gall stones while a scan to check on the wellbeing of their child had revealed the baby had spina bifida.

Appearing before Maryborough Magistrates Court, Bingham pleaded guilty to charges of receiving stolen property, fraud, possessing utensils or pipes and producing dangerous drugs.

The court heard Bingham had pawned scrap metal items worth $256.20, which had later found to have been stolen from Maryborough Recycling.

When police executed a search warrant at his Maryborough home, they found cannabis seeds and a water pipe used to smoke drugs.

Bingham was serving a six-month suspended sentence at the time of his arrest, the court heard.

Mr George said that while his partner was in hospital, Bingham was the sole carer of their two little girls, both aged under three.

Bingham's partner would need to deliver the baby in about two weeks, Mr George said, as the child needed urgent treatment for the neural tube defect.

Magistrate John Smith said the only appropriate punishment was a term of imprisonment, sentencing Bingham to six months' jail for the fresh offences and ordering him to serve the whole of the suspended sentence, with a parole release date of August 19.

Bingham was also ordered to pay $256.20 in restitution for the stolen items.
