New mum workshop connects regional women

BECOMING a mum can be both exciting and daunting at the same time and the new role often leaves women feeling like they are alone.

Roma resident Emma Taylor found herself in this situation and wanted to reach out to other mums experiencing the same thing. That's when she came up with Soul Mama.

"I've been doing it for around three years now and it really just started as a way for me to connect with other mums to talk about the challenges of parenting,” she said.

"More so the emotional challenges and dealing with anxiety and depression.

"So I just wanted to connect with people who were in the same situation.”

Ms Taylor said she aimed to reach out to other women who were in need.

"I wanted to break the stigma associated with anxiety and depression because it really is so common,” she said.

"The group has other mums who relate to what your feeling and I organise face to face meetings and I also have a Facebook page.”

Ms Taylor will be presenting a workshop about Soul Mama at the Queensland Rural, Regional and Remote Women Network State Conference in Roma.

"So the conference in general will provide an opportunity for rural women to connect with each other and hear from speakers and be inspired to try and learn new things,” she said.

"My workshop will provide people with an opportunity to talk about what challenges they are facing now and then I will dig a little deeper and try to work out what beliefs they hold that add to those challenges.

"They can then visualise how things could change with different beliefs because people often have high expectations of what they should be doing.”

The aim of Ms Taylor's workshop is to get people talking about their own experiences. "The workshop is called Walk With Me and it's really about getting across the message that I'm still learning as I go and I just want other people to walk with me on that path.

"We've all got our own wisdom to contribute.”

The QRRRWN Maranoa State Conference will be held on October 6 - 8 in Roma. Ms Taylor will be presenting her workshop on Saturday, October 6, from 2.30pm. If you would like to find out more about Soul Mama visit Ms Taylor's Facebook page at www.facebook.com/SoulMamaRoma.
