New Maranoa MP David Littleproud outlines region’s priorities

THE new Member for Maranoa David Littleproud has outlined some of his key priorities for the region, after emerging as the victorious candidate in the Federal Election.

Mr Littleproud commended the campaigns of the other candidates, stating the dignified way the election was run was a testament to the quality of those who stood up for the region.

He said the hard work begins now.

“It wasn’t personalised; it was run on party ideas. That’s how elections should be run,” he said.

“I’m very grateful to be the new member, and that we need to engage with the electorate to make sure the people of the Maranoa get their fair share.”

On a two-candidate preferred basis, Littleproud led with roughly 67.5% of the vote, with Labor tailing with 32.5%.

When his victory became apparent, he reached out to his family and friends locally, as well as the Isolated Children’s Parent’s Association of Queensland.

“Obviously I’m very humbled by the support the people of Maranoa have given me,” he commented on the victory.

Mr Littleproud outlined several key areas of focus for his first year:

Telecommunications

Mr Littleproud said the roll-out of the National Broadband Network would continue through to Longreach, with construction already under way in Dalby.

Water Infrastructure

As part of the Coalition’s $2.5 billion Water Fund, Mr Littleproud hopes to continue engaging with local councils to water infrastructure in the Maranoa.

Roads and Rails

Mr Littleproud said he would continue building on the recent improvements to roads in the Maranoa, with continued upgrades planned for the Warrego Hwy. A further $590 million has been flagged for the region’s inland rail as well.

Aged Care

Mr Littleproud said he would continue to invest in facilities to ensure “our people in Western Queensland don’t need to move away for aged care”.

Pensioners

Mr Littleproud also said he would continue to support pensioners to help them keep up with the cost of living pressures.
