National shoot triggers praise from far and wide
Shooting: As one of only three grounds in Australia capable of hosting national shoots, the Roma Gun Club's 10-day event went beyond their target, according to visiting out-of-towners.
Travelling up from Goulburn, Matt Williams, Troy Cook and Tim Shorrock first got into shooting a few years ago, as something to do at weekends and a way to see more of the country.
"It's a very competitive sport, you're in it for yourself but you're also against everybody else in the club,” Cook said.
"It's different to football where you're all on the same side - but despite that - there's lot of camaraderie.”
For many visitors, like Williams, Cook and Shorrock, it was their first time competing at Roma's state-of-the-art grounds.
"This is our first time here, we've been to nationals before but this is a fantastic set-up,” Shorrock said.
"This event has been really well done. If you're gonna travel, you may as well shoot them all and give it a go, so that's what we did.
"We entered about every event.”
Roma Gun Club president Andrew Whyte said the effort of his committee in carrying out such a well-run event was to be celebrated.
"I'm a bit sad now that it's all over but it was a fantastic 10 days,” Whyte said.
"There were some amazing moments we saw over the chariot shoot and the nationals event, that really goes to show there's something in shooting for everyone.
"As one of only three grounds in Australia that can host the nationals, I'd say we've done well.
"We'll start preparing for 2029 now.”
