FRANCE will have three men into the quarter-finals of a grand slam for the first time after Lucas Pouille upset two-time US Open champion Rafael Nadal in a five-set thriller in New York.

Pouille, who had never won a match at Flushing Meadows before this year, held on in a last-16 clash lasting more than four hours to defeat the Spanish 14-time major winner 6-1 2-6 6-4 3-6 7-6.

He will join countrymen Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gael Monfils in the last eight and plays Monfils.

Tenth seed Gael Monfils had a straight-sets win over Marcos Baghdatis.

He took out the match 6-3 6-2 6-3 and was delighted with how he played against his Cypriot mate.

"He's a good friend, I know him for a long time,” the 30-year-old said.

"We had many battles in juniors and we have many also on the senior tour.

"I had to be very consistent with my serve because he's a pretty good returner.

"I was very fast on the baseline, so I guess everything was fine today.”

Tsonga was made to work for his pass to the final eight, but emerged victorious over American Jack Sock in a 6-3 6-3 6-7 6-2 win.

Madison Keys lost out to a resurgent Caroline Wozniacki 6-3 6-4, who set up a last-eight clash with Latvian Anastasija Sevastova, who was a 6-4 7-5 winner over Britain's Johanna Konta.

Italian seventh seed Roberta Vinci was first through to the quarter-finals, defeating Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko 7-6 6-2.
