Musical students primed for eisteddfod

The 10th annual Roma and District Regional Eisteddfod starts tomorrow, with hundreds of participants expected to take part during the three days and two nights of the event.

Entrants will showcase their vocal and instrumental skills over 63 sections, from prep-level nursery rhymes to secondary musical theatre duo/trio.

The majority of competitors come from schools across the Maranoa region, including students from Roma, Mitchell, St George and Wallumbilla, however there is a chance for adults to have their five minutes of fame too in the open section.

This year's eisteddfod will feature vocal and instrumental entrants, including a pop rock and country rock section.

Organiser Carmel Treasure said the workshops organised for schools across the district earlier this year by the Maranoa Regional Council and the Roma and District Eisteddfod Committee had engaged more performers.

"We were concerned as it seemed whole school communities were missing out on worthwhile and enjoyable musical experiences, so we commissioned him to bring music to regional classes across the Maranoa,” said Ms Treasure.

"A lot of students who participated in those workshops, such as with (Sydney Conservatorium High School music teacher) Michael Bradshaw, have entered and will perform this year,” she said.

"Our primary sections are especially well supported.”

The event will be adjudicated by Helen Smith, a principal examiner for AMEB Queensland.

The event will begin at 8.30am tomorrow at Roma Bungil Cultural Centre.
