Mungallala not being evacuated: Rural Fire Service

THE south-west Queensland town of Mungallala is not being evacuated due to bushfires, contrary to some media reports.

Fires have been raging in the region, about 600km west of Brisbane but the town remains safe.

Inspector Graham Cooke from Rural Fire Service at Roma said widespread fires in Chesterton National Park west of Mungallala had jumped contrainment lines but there was no plan to move people.

"There is no plan to evacuate Mungallala or Morven," Insp Cooke said.

"We will keep people informed but we are not expecting an evacuation."

Insp Cooke said wind conditions were favourable for firefighting although wind changes later this evening could cause some concern.

"We'll be keeping people notified," he said.
