Multi-million dollar Saleyards project on track

HOLDING a hot cup of coffee and looking out to a prime sale is what Senator James McGrath imagined as he saw the multi-million dollar project in full swing.

Queensland senators James McGrath and Susan McDonald were in town for the Bush Council Conference and Economic development councillor Cameron O'Neil thought it would be a great opportunity to show them the progress of the $7.59 million Roma Saleyards Multi-Purpose Facility.

Mr McGrath, who was turning the sod only a few months ago, said the progress made by council was brilliant.

"It shows what a council can do in partnership with state and federal government, and it shows what a council can do when it steps up to the plate,” Mr McGrath said.

"Councils around Queensland are more than just bodies that worry about rates, rubbish and roads.

"They've got to make sure they can drive economic development of a region and what Maranoa Regional Council have done through this project here is driving it - this is as good as it gets for value for money for taxpayer dollars.”

With all three stages anticipated to be completed by February 2020, Cr O'Neil said it was important to showcase the magnitude of the project.

Mr McGrath said Maranoa council have done a marvellous job at knocking on doors in Brisbane and Canberra showing that they want to work with different levels of government.

"The persistence from council, wanting to do the work and put their own money in with a lot of blood, sweat in tears was brilliant,” Mr McGrath said.
