MP pushes for bigger budget focus on regions

AN independent Victorian Federal MP has moved to ensure regional Australia is given more prominence in the Federal budget.

On Tuesday night member for Indi Cathy McGowan (pictured) introduced her first bill - to ensure every budget includes a full statement on the effects on regional Australia of new funding and cuts.

Her first private members' bill aims to change the Charter of Budget Honesty to enforce the statements that were a common feature in recent budgets except the Coalition's 2014 budget.

She said the bill "answers the call" from regional Australia asking government to ensure "regional impact statements" were included in all future Federal budgets.

While the bill was introduced and seconded by Tasmanian independent MP Andrew Wilkie, no government or Labor politicians stood to talk on the bill, and it was adjourned for debate.

It remains unclear whether Labor or the Coalition will support the proposal.
