TAKING on revered material such as Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children required the expert hands of a great director to translate it to the big screen, and Tim Burton was, on paper, the perfect candidate for such feat.

Add the talent of Eva Green, Samuel L Jackson and Ella Purnell and the expectation is this film will shine.

Instead of that I found myself bored half way through.

When Jake (Asa Butterfield) discovers clues to a mystery that spans different worlds and times, he finds a magical place known as Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.

The mystery and danger deepen as he gets to know the residents of the home and learns about their special powers.

But they also have powerful enemies.

Ultimately, Jacob discovers that only his own special 'peculiarity' can save his new friends.

This film has highs and lows, and unfortunately the lows are very deep.

One of them is Asa Butterfield who fails to make his character Jake stand out among the cast of oddballs.

He just disappears among the rest.

Then there's the issue of the uneven hand of Tim Burton in this film.

This has to be one of the most disappointing of Burton's films, mainly because of the low quality CGI effects and the way the story has been told.

It's the human component of the project - the likes of Eva Green, Samuel L Jackson, Dame Judi Dench, Terrence Stamp and Rupert Everett - that turn this project into a more palatable film.

Another highlight is the wonderful score by Michael Higham and Matthew Margeson. Truly a well done body of music that accompanies the action and highlights the emotional undertones.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children will entertain the whole family but may disappoint Tim Burton fans.
