Motoring and getting muddy

SPEEDWAY: The Boys are Back in Town blared from the speakers as spectators filed through the gates at Roma Speedway on Saturday night.

The rock classic was soon followed by the dulcet tones of Thirsty Merc belting out In the Summertime and really, it would have been hard to find a more appropriate soundtrack, as racing fans gathered on a balmy summer night to witness the first speedway meet of 2017.

Drivers competed in three classes - juniors, production sedans and super sedans.

Gates opened at 5.30pm and spectators claimed their spots while enjoying food and drink from the fully stocked bar and canteen.

Linda Acutt, a Roma Speedway committee member, said the first event for 2017 was a success.

"I would like to thank everyone that came out to support our first event of 2017,” Acutt said on Facebook.

"Well done to all our racers and volunteers for working through the heat.”

Acutt acknowledged the heat was a particular challenge for drivers and spectators alike.

"We appreciate that you stuck with us while getting the track prepared in difficult heat conditions,” she said.

Now the 2017 season is well and truly under way, Roma Speedway has put the call out for new members eager to experience the thrill of the high-speed sport.

"New blood is always welcome,” Acutt said.

"If you think you may be interested in racing or volunteering please contact us so our racers and committee can point you in the right direction.”

The club is gearing up for an awesome 2017, Acutt said, and there was plenty for members and new members for look forward to.

"Fun, speed, dust, mud and great friends,” she said.

"Can't wait for the next one and our main event for Easter in the Country.”
