Morning tea to raise funds
NOW in its 24th year, the Biggest Morning Tea is one of Cancer Council's leading fundraising events and the largest event of its kind in the country.
With an Australian being diagnosed with cancer every five minutes, it has never been a better time to get involved.
For the first time since its inception, Roma's Cancer Council held the biggest morning tea over a weekend to encourage more numbers and the change paid off with more than 100 people attending the Sunday morning event at Moorelands Bush Nursery.
A cent auction and multi-draw raffles drew in extra donations.
Many cakes and slices were on offer to purchase as well as $5 and $8 plates of treats and sweets. The table festooned with pikelets, cupcakes, tarts, slices and other baked goodies.
Annette Huntley said the committee was still counting donations, but they had almost reached $6000.
"We're so thrilled with that, holding it on the weekend meant we got to see a lot of new faces of people who can't come to the event when it's held during the week,” she said.
Toowoomba Cancer Council's Jess Huntley accepted a $375 donation from the Dismounts touch team.
"In Queensland one person every 20 minutes is diagnosed,” Ms Huntley said.
"In the south-west region, 2040 people are diagnosed with cancer each year and 660 die.”
Prostate and breast cancers are the two most common cancers for men and women respectively in south-west Queensland, followed by melanomas for both men and women.
