Mitchell Magpies soar in U18s, sink in A-grade

MITCHELL Magpies will be hoping their under-18 side can go one better in 2016 after their demoralising loss last year in the grand final – and they have started in the best possible way.

The under-18s are now 2-0 for the season after thumping the St George Saints 38-18 away from home.

This follows another massive win over the Wallumbilla-Surat Red Bulls the week before and cements them as one of the foremost teams heading into the early season break.

Coach Geoff Kenafake praised his young side for their composure against a determined Saints outfit.

“There’s plenty to like – they had good communication with each other and they were on their game,” he said.

“We’ve picked up a couple of injuries but we’ve got a few weeks off so that will help us.

“They worked the ball well, did what I asked and handled the ball a bit better than the opponents.

“They’re a good bunch of boys and they’ve got brains between their ears.”

It was a far tougher afternoon for the A-grade and reserve grade sides, with St George humbling the visitors 70-6 and 46-10 respectively.

While the A-grade Magpies were their own worst enemy throughout the match, completing less than half their sets, Kenafake said St George was a side to watch in 2016.

“They’ve got a very good side in the A-grade – that team are very fit, fast and well-drilled,” he said.

“They stuck to their game plan and I don’t think we’ll be the only side to get a touch-up.

“If we could hold onto the ball it might have been a different game, but we were just buggered from tackling.”
