Mitchell gives growing praise of Lions coaching hopeful

AFL: Hawthorn champion Sam Mitchell has given Brisbane his endorsement of Chris Fagan as its new senior coach.

Currently the Hawks football manager, Fagan is the clear front-runner to win the post.

Mitchell told SEN radio yesterday that 55-year-old Fagan, who presented to the Lions board earlier this week, was an "outstanding” candidate.

"His ability to bring people together and get the best out of people and that stability would be outstanding for any organisation,” Mitchell said.

"(But) I hope he doesn't get it because we'd love to keep him at Hawthorn.”

Fagan worked closely with Neale Daniher for a decade at Melbourne before becoming Alastair Clarkson's right-hand man at Hawthorn in 2007, initially as director of coaching and development.

"He sits in on all our leadership meetings, he's on the computer and doesn't say too much, he sort of takes the minutes and makes sure we're on track,” Mitchell said.

"When he does say something, it's usually something that no one even questions it, that's what we do and it's usually a great idea. That ability to know what to do and when, he certainly would hold them in good stead.”
