Mitchell Bridge Re-opens

Good news for Mitchell tonight as the Department of Main Roads has decided to re-open the bridge which was battered in the floods.

The Bridge, which part of the vital Brisbane to Darwin national highway, was due to be replaced in 2013 and there were fears it might not re-open.

However the Department said the bridge would tonight under traffic control and load restrictions.

The bridge will carry load and width limitations.

It sustained structural damage after being struck by debris but visual inspections by engineers, load testing and observations using sonar equipment has confirmed it is safe to reopen with load restrictions.

A 5t load limit currently applies to the Warrego Highway between Roma and Mitchell however permits for essential supplies up to 42.5 tonnes GVM can be applied for from the department.

Temporary closures will continue as more debris will need to be removed, handrails rebuilt and some approaches reconstructed.

The link between Mitchell and Morven is still closed at this stage but will open tomorrow subject to RoadTek completing necessary works.

Meanwhile Ergon Energy has restored power to all customers in Roma and Mitchell where it was safe to do so.

The high-voltage network that supplies homes and business is fully operational and the low-voltage service lines to individual customers have been reinstated where possible.

About 45 properties in Mitchell and 64 in Roma have yet to be reconnected, either because of inundation or work is required by a licensed electrical contractor before they that can be done safely.

Ergon Energy is appealing to people using high-pressure water cleaners to exercise extreme caution and not to spray water near power points, electrical equipment or appliances during the clean-up.

Maranoa Regional Council have announced how many houses were affecting saying cleanup efforts in Roma and Mitchell for property clean outs and rubbish collections.

The numbers are almost identical in both towns with Mitchell having 288 flood affected properties and Roma having 290. All of these properties had flood water over the floor boards.

Maranoa Mayor Robert Loughnan said the damage is extensive, but with the level of clean up assistance, Mitchell and Roma can begin to move into the recovery phase.

"In excess of 200 volunteers will be assisting today in Mitchell from various different organisations and generous helpers from the community," Cr Loughnan said.

All of your support and assistance is greatly appreciated and we cannot thank you enough."

Council is also organising replacement rubbish bins for all those that were washed away and an update will be provided shortly on when these will be supplied to residents.

Plumbers have been assessing Roma's water, sewerage and gas mains.  One gas leak has been found and repaired, all of the sewerage pumps are going except one and the town's water mains have been flushed out to ensure the safety of the town's water supply. Council is currently assessing the condition of Mitchell facilities and will have an update by Thursday.
