Exhibition opens on Mitchell-born Prime Minister Frank Forde

THE public is invited to an official opening of a new display featuring the life and career of Mitchell-born Prime Minister, Frank Forde tomorrow

Francis Michael Forde was the 15th Prime Minister and the shortest serving leader in Australia's history, in office for only eight days.

He was born in Mitchell on July 18, 1890, the second of six children of Irish immigrants John and Ellen (Quirk) Forde.

Forde went to primary school in Mitchell, then boarded at the Christian Brothers College in Toowoomba.

He joined the Labor Party in Rockhampton and served in the Queensland parliament before being elected as the Federal member for Capricornia and then went on to be deputy leader.

Forde was named Prime Minister in 1945 on the death of John Curtin.

But he lost the subsequent leadership ballot to Ben Chifley.

The Mitchell Library is hosting the display tomorrow at 10am.

Morning tea will be provided.
