Cowboy truckies targeted by Qld govt

MAIN Roads Minister Mark Bailey has promised "increased law enforcement targeting cowboy truckies who flout road rules along the busy Brisbane Urban Corridor".

Mr Bailey said as an example of the ALP's commitment to the crackdown, anti-heavy-vehicle signage would be installed along Mt Gravatt-Capalaba Rd, Kessels Rd and Granard Rd.

"Trucks heavier than 4.5 tonnes are not permitted to use the Brisbane Urban Corridor as a through-route, but are allowed to do local drop-offs and pick-ups,'' Mr Bailey said. "This move will improve safety and travel time in the area. "

ALP candidate for Mansfield Corrine McMillan said she collected more than 500 signatures on a petition. "The community has raised serious concerns with freight traffic using the BUC (Brisbane Urban Corridor) as a through-route."

Sunnybank state ALP MP Peter Russo said "enforcement activity will include compliance staff using mobile, automatic numberplate-recognition devices to identify the heavy vehicles flouting the road rules".

State LNP MP for Mansfield Ian Walker said the ALP should have been enforcing road rules long before an election had been called.

"I welcomer any future law enforcement. If they have not been enforcing the law, then they should have been,'' Mr Walker said.
