Millions in funding in fight against feral pests

QUEENSLAND farmers have received a $1million boost from the Federal Government to help control feral animals and weeds on drought- affected land.

Minister for Agriculture David Littleproud said pests and weeds meant less money in farmers' pockets.

"Pests are an even bigger problem for farmers during drought, so this investment will help those who are doing it tough," the Maranoa MP said.

"The money will help build cluster fences that control wild dogs, fund pest baiting, shooting and trapping programs, and help with weed control programs.

"The Coalition government has already invested $12million in Queensland controlling wild dogs, and wool producers are seeing fewer sheep killed."

Mr Littleproud said the government had committed $25.8million in the Agricultural Competitiveness White Paper for pest control in drought-affected areas across Australia, on top of a further $50million for established pest animals and weeds nationally.

"Constructing wild dog fences will also create new jobs in drought-affected communities where people need work the most," he said.

"This builds on the $12million worth of projects already provided to support regions across Queensland."
