Miles upset A-grade win in Roma District League grand final
MILES Devils broke a 32-year losing streak as it took out the Roma and District Rugby League A-Grade decider at Bassett Park today.
The Devils caused a huge upset thrashing runaway minor premiers St George 44-12 in hot conditions as four different clubs won the four grades on a big day in Roma.
The Dragons had lost just one game all season and had crushed Miles in the preliminary final but they were never really at the races today.
It was an even first half despite St George having a man sinbinned and Miles just shaded matters at the break 10-6.
When the Dragons scored the first try of the second half to lead 12-10 it seemed as if the minor premiers would go on but it proved all one way traffic in the other direction as Miles pummelled their opponents into submission.
Miles scored six tries without reply and landed a 50m penalty on the siren to add insult to heavy injuries St George sustained on the day.
Captain Wayne Collie was ecstatic as he lifted the trophy ending decades of hurt that date back to 1981.
St George also fell short in the reserves going down to the Wallumbilla-Surat Red Bulls.
Just as in the A-grade it was tight and close first half with the Bulls going in 22-18 ahead. They pulled clear with three tries in the last 15 minutes to win 38-18.
St George didn't leave Bassett Park empty handed. Their under 18s went through the season unbeaten and were too good for Cities in the decider winning 46-16.
Cities however also tasted glory on the day winning their third successive under 16 title and doing it in style by going unbeaten all season.
They started strongly against Chinchilla and led 16-4 at the break before the Bulldogs came roaring back to level the scores.
That was the cue for Cities to put on the accelerator and they scored three tries in the final 11 minutes to win 32-16
