Meet Nigel, the Roma sheep with two hearts
THE Western Star loves Valentine’s stories.
So meet Nigel, a local sheep with, well, two hearts – one on the inside, and the shape of another, neatly birth-marked above the first.
Nigel was raised from his first day by Roma’s Tina and Jamahl Hamilton, after his mum died – and quickly discovered his unusual mark.
“We saw it when he was a baby,” Tina said.
“We had to wash him to keep him clean – and there it was.”
Nigel is approaching his first birthday – in May – and Tina said he’s going to remain a family member rather than end up in the freezer.
He’s adjusted well to his adopted persona.
“He runs with our two dogs; our bitch actually produced milk for him for the first couple of weeks,” Tina said.
And he’s become a bit of a celebrity in Roma, as perhaps one of the most photographed sheep in the region.
“We tie him up on the back of the ute with the dogs – we have a special harness for him – he’s one of the most photographed sights on the main street.”
And now he’s had his first shearing.
“The shearer said he had never seen such a marking on a sheep in his whole time [in the business],” Tina said.
But Nigel became a bit too friendly with dogs of late, understandably, which put him at risk, so he’s transferred out to Tina’s mother’s spread for the time being.
“We’ve taken him to my mum’s – she has 40 acres,” Tina said.
“We’re living in town at present and it’s bit dangerous for him, as he is too friendly with all the dogs.
“But if we get a place with land we’ll bring him back to live with us.”
