'$300K mistake': Dispute over cost of park stuff up
MAYOR Matt Burnett said it was disappointing Gladstone Regional Council was going to have to pay to fix the botched Liz Cunningham Park.
But Cr Burnett said in the fortnightly council meeting that "it wasn't the $780,000 that has been reported".
"It would have actually cost considerably more had the project been done properly in the first place," he said.
"It's more like a $300,000 mistake which is not a small mistake in any stretch of the imagination. But it is definitely not a $780,000 mistake.
"I understand it probably makes for a better headline but $300,000 is a big enough headline as it is."'

Councillor Cindi Bush introduced the item to the council meeting, saying the work to repair the park, which was handed over to Calliope sporting clubs, would cost about $600,000 give or take 10%.
The field needed to be fixed because the original design's gradient was too steep to play cricket and soccer.
Cr Bush said councillors had asked council officers to compile a report about how this happened.
Cr Chris Trevor said the council should "steel itself for some additional costing for some turfing as well".
This turfing was estimated in the council's environment and community committee meeting to cost $180,000.
Mayor Matt Burnett said he supported paying for the turfing because the work the clubs had put in to grow grass on the current surface would go to waste once excavation work was redone.
