Heavy downpour batters region, causes flooding

TORRENTIAL rains and strong winds have lashed Roma causing localised flooding as a weather system moves east.

Residents have described the sudden onslaught of rain as "torrential", reporting doors were blown open streets flooded.

"It was medium rain and then all of a sudden a thunderstorm or something came through and brought with it the most torrential rain," the resident told The Chronicle.

"It went on for about 15 to 20 minutes.

"There was lots of lightning and thunder - it blew all the doors open as well."

Videos shared on social media show damage to a trampoline as heavy rains lash a suburban street.

Another video shows a torrent of floodwaters on one of the town's main streets.

Meanwhile Toowoomba has been soaking up much-needed rainfall which will continue overnight.

The Bureau of Meteorology said Toowoomba would clear Tuesday and later in the week.
