Massive airport expansion contract 'imminent'

ANNOUNCEMENT of a winning contractor to build a new runway at Sunshine Coast Airport is "imminent", according to expansion project director Ross Ullman.

His team will on Thursday recommend to a Sunshine Coast Council meeting the best way to proceed in regards to five bids short-listed for the runway construction contract.

The special meeting, which will be closed to the public, comes after councillors met on Thursday last week to discuss major projects for the region.

Mr Ullman said the budget for the entire expansion process, which included work separate to the runway construction, had been reduced from about $347 million to slightly less than $300 million.

He said the upcoming construction contract was "by far and away" the biggest part of that overall budget.

"We are in serious negotiations with contractors prior to being able to make a recommendation to council on Thursday," Mr Ullman said.

"Our recommendation to the council will be based on achieving the most competitive and cost-effective contract to undertake the works."

He said the main constraint on works would be working around turtle-nesting season.

Construction will require sand being pumped from barges parked off Marcoola beach through a pipeline onto the site.

Mr Ullman said that work couldn't start until April next year when turtle-nesting season ended and had to be finished by the end of October.

"In the meantime we will be checking to see whether or not there are any turtles nesting in the vicinity."

He said preliminary works such as movement of a power line and technical preliminary works had progressed well.
