AS people walked by him thinking he was drunk, Danny Davis lay in the street in the throes of the onset of an epileptic fit.

Making his way along Bazaar St in Maryborough, Mr Davis fell three times and, as the seizure took hold, he was unable to ask for assistance.

The third time he fell, it was on the footpath near Fraser Coast Regional Council workers Peter Stevens and Tony Collings, who were laying concrete opposite the Royal Hotel.

"We knew straight away something wasn't right," Mr Stevens said.

"You've got to help people."

The two men called an ambulance for Mr Davis and waited with him until it arrived.

Mr Davis said he was diagnosed with epilepsy seven years ago.

Since then he has had a constant health battle, with a seizure putting him on life support for 13 days at one point.

He says if the two council workers hadn't stopped and helped him, he doesn't know what would have happened.

Mr Davis said he was very grateful to the two men.

"They're absolutely amazing," he said.

Mr Davis has had his wallet stolen from him on two occasions when he has suffered a seizure, as the fits leave him vulnerable and unable to communicate.

He said he wanted to educate the community about epilepsy after his experience.

"People treated me like I was a drunk," he said.

He encouraged people to stop and talk to the person if they seemed to be in trouble.

"Don't make assumptions," he said.

Fraser Coast councillor Daniel Sanderson praised the council workers who helped Mr Davis.

"It's absolutely fantastic community spirit," Cr Sanderson said.
