Maranoa teams dominate Logan Basketball Championships

BASKETBALL: For Roma State College's basketball team, a shot at the Logan Championships is one of the biggest leaps they've taken this year.

The school team was one of the three Maranoa teams that competed in the All School Basketball Championships in Logan last weekend, which saw a record of 127 teams from all over the region feature across four divisions.

St John's Girls were the stand-out team, winning three out of seven matches and narrowly going down in two other matches by less than three points, one off the buzzer.

Led by senior and captain Katie Lane, the girls played were rewarded with their first ever win of the tournament against Woodcrest College early in the pool rounds.

The girls went on to win two other games against Marymount College and Aquinas College as well.

Roma State College finished with a win in fourth division over Upper Coomera State College and narrowly missed out on the second win of the tournament losing on the buzzer against Holy Spirit College from Mackay by one point.

Maranoa junior basketball co-ordinator Mat Gane said it was a long time coming for so many of the players, who had all worked hard in the lead up to the tournament.

"Overall it was a great tournament, especially for the girls,” he said.

"It's been a long time coming for the girls, but they have worked hard in the lead up to this tournament.

"They deserve these wins and we are expecting an even better performance from them next year.”
