Maranoa Mayor goes to Canberra to lobby for flood funding
MARANOA Mayor Rob Loughnan remains hopeful of getting more Federal funding for Roma's flood mitigation after several meetings with senior government ministers in Canberra last week.
Crs Loughnan, Peter Flynn and Cameron O'Neil had 11 meetings with both sides of federal politics in a busy couple of days and the Mayor said the trip was a great success, with all meetings equally productive.
"We want to get some traction for federal funding of Stage 2 of Roma's Flood Mitigation project," Cr Loughnan said.
"We stressed the importance of mitigating flood events in our region, instead of recovering from them and they overwhelmingly accepted our arguments."
Cr Loughnan said economies of scale meant it was imperative to start Stage 2 straight after Stage 1.
"It needs to be done now," he said.
The delegation thanked Minister Bill Shorten for his contribution in getting the National Insurance Affordability fund to give $7 million for Roma's levee embankment.
Some of the week's other meetings were with Leader of the Opposition Tony Abbott, Senator Barnaby Joyce, agriculture minister Joe Ludwig and Greens Senator Larissa Waters.
Funds raised so far: Maranoa Regional Council $1.25 million; State Government $12.4 million; Federal Government $7m (Insurance Affordability); Total $20.65 million. Funds awaiting confirmation mid year: Federal Government $7 million (RDA Round 4).
